SHORT BIO
Rogelio Meléndez a.k.a Ayer (Reynosa, México 1988) is a multidisciplinary visual artist who covers different media in his production such as: graffiti, painting, mural, installation and video. In his work he questions the human being who lives within a society that gradually becomes indifferent, full of prejudice and fear, and that over time loses human values, leading to his own self-destruction. His work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions such as in the Casa de la Cultura Cusco in Cusco (Peru 2016), the Alfredo Zalce Museum of Contemporary Art in Morelia (Mexico 2016), at the International Video Art Festival “PROYECTOR” (Spain >2018), the Cultural Institute of Mexico in France (France 2015), the 18th International Festival of Electronic Language “FILE” (Brazil 2017), The Museum of Contemporary Art of Tamaulipas (Tamaulipas 2015), among others. He was also winner of the acquisition award at La Bienal de Las Fronteras (Mexico 2014), “Best Direction” Award at the Independent Film Festival of the South of Tamaulipas (Tamaulipas 2019), Fray Andres de Olmos “FAO” Award in the category of Outstanding Young People (Mexico 2018), selected in the IV Biennial of Painting “J.A. Monroy ”(Jalisco 2018), in the X Biennial of Painting and Engraving“ Alfredo Zalce ”(Michoacán 2016) and in the XI Biennial of Painting“ Joaquín Clausell ”(Campeche 2015), honorable mention in the Tenth Art Exhibition Grupo Reforma ( México 2015), beneficiary of the PECDA23 Program for the Stimulation of Creativity and Artistic Development in the category of “Young Creators” (Tamaulipas 2019) and winner of the INTERFAZ emerging artist scholarship (Nuevo León 2015).
ARTIST STATEMENT
In my current work I seek to create an interaction between space, piece and observer, since the observer is active constructor in the development of the work, in it I put the questioning of the human being who lives within a society that little by little Becomes indifferent, full of prejudice and fear, and that over time is losing human values, leading to their own self-destruction. This produces a discovery that evokes its intense physical and psychic fragmentation, which leads to reflection on the fragility of the human being, to meditation on death and solitude, focusing on a rather grotesque existence and leaving it floating in a life without too much sense.
